I remember that the best way to level a priest was to literally just spam shoot with a decent wand for the first 20-30 levels. I remember enhance's whole playstyle being praying for an RNG windfury blessing while casting earth shock every 5(6?) seconds. I have a ton of fond memories of my time in vanilla, but I also remember why getting a warrior to 60 was such a slog.

People like to rightly harp on current WoW for how much "pruning" has been done over the years, but having 6 bars full of abilities back in classic didn't necessarily mean a given character was actually all that fun to play. Not even from a balance perspective (although that is definitely an issue), but just from a "do I actually enjoy playing this character" view. The social and progression aspects of Classic are really appealing obviously, as that's what most people are excited about, but man do I not miss the overall class/spec design and itemization issues. Raid fights in general have only been increasing in mechanical complexity over the years (and not always for the better, hard doesn't always mean good).Īs far as the overall topic of the thread, I think it's a shame that either version of WoW requires major trade-offs, at least in my case. Not sure when the bolded was supposed to have happened, at least when it comes to real progression raiding and not intentionally accessible easy modes. Despite being consistently subbed to retail WoW for the past 15 years, I find myself with almost no motivation to play Battle for Azeroth while counting down the days until Classic. In the past I would always say that Classic wouldn't take off and that people only think they want Classic, but it seems like I was dead wrong. Obviously there are things that WoW has improved on since vanilla, but when it comes to broader design philosophy, vanilla Wow towers over Battle for Azeroth.
In the past I was always someone who was defending modern WoW, and I did genuinely enjoy it all the way through Legion (or at least the middle of Legion) but now that Classic is actually here and can be looked at next to retail.yeah, I'm eating quite a bit of crow.
And is in many ways better than a lot of modern games (especially modern WoW). Nostalgia is definitely what's fueling a lot of the initial attention and mindshare for the game, but once you get in there again you realize that the overall design of classic WoW is still incredibly strong. Some of it sure, but not all of it.īellular even mentions this in the video. I really don't think you can chalk all this up to simple nostalgia.
